Ya gotta a big heart kid, but not my good towels...mmmk?

School. It teaches the kids so many things. They learn about Martin Luther King, they did a big presidential vote when Obama won. They talk about worms, learn to read, etc.

I mean that is what school is for, learning.

School also, gets a little crazy on fundraisers, charities, a help this group and help this group.

Which is not a bad thing. Not at all. It's just overkill.

At Christmas time it was send in donations for the local Cat society. With pictures of sad kitties on the pamphlet. "These kitties need supplies. These kitties need love."

Blah blah (so does my "kitty" but I'm not parading it around the local schools)

Last night, it was a note, please send supplies for the people of Haiti. It's tragic what happened there, it really is. Tell my warm hearted children about the children in Haiti and they react.

This morning I hear Buggy rooting through the closet in the bathroom.

"Mom can we spare a box of bandaids?"

"What?" I yelled back.

"Bandaids! Can I throw this box in a bag for the Haiti children?"

"Sure honey."

I could hear the bag rustling in the bathroom as she is singing along to her new Taylor Swift cd. By the time she was done she had "collected" bandaids and two towels.

Wait. Towels? Those are my good towels...

"But MOOOOMMMMM the children of Haiti..."

Yeah. Right. Um, why don't you send them your DS, or you one million webkinz, or how about ... shit I don't know. ANYTHING BUT MY GOOD TOWELS.

"You have a sweet heart honey, but those towels aren't leaving this house unless I am carting them to the beach with me."

(I'm a selfish bitch like that.)

I did find a couple of NOT SO GOOD towels. Hope the Haitis don't mind a little fraying.

Tonight she plans to rummage through her closet to see if there is anything in there that she doesn't "like" anymore. Must be so nice to have all of the great things to be able to afford a little purging.

You can find me in her closet tonight, caressing my good towels, helping her pack up some things for the less fortunate. Which is a good thing.

13 Sharing the Madness:

  1. we gave a bunch yesterday -- but didn't get as far as Haiti. The 4 year old was only willing to let his castoffs go as far as Gramma's house.

  2. LOL. That is funny. My son would be the same way. Give all my crap away but would protect his own stuff with his life.

  3. I know what you mean. Junior's not even in school yet but through work I get hit up for all the fundraisers--wrapping paper, Girl Scout cookies, Hurricane Katrina, postcards to soldiers. I'm happy to help out but sometimes I feel like an open cash register, and I have bills to pay. It's frustrating.

  4. At this point, anything helps. Good for you and your children in donating.

Oh and I totally understand about the towels. I think I'd do the same.

  7. I *just* donated a TON of stuff to Goodwill like, two weeks ago. So, I really don't have much for all the Haiti relief drives and am left feeling like a selfish ass. Oh well. I donated through the text campaign.

  10. I understand the school thing, it's a good thing to teach the kids but .....geez! We have to eat too! Buggy girl has one fundraiser on the tail of another. What does tuition pay for?

  11. This fall, my son had 6 different fundraisers going on at the same time: Pizza, bird houses, Christmas Wreathes, cookie dough, lobster raffle tickets and spaghetti dinner tickets. Yee Gads. It is hard to keep up with it all.

  12. I help a woman with her kitty whenever I can.

As for Haiti, very sad situation. During the football playoffs today, the TV said to text HAITI to 90999 and you'll donate $10 to the American Red Cross. It's so easy to give!

For you to take time to pack up towels is generous. Good for you and your daughter.

  13. Good for your daughter! What a big heart. But how do they manage to make us feel so selfish? Shouldn't we feel good we raised thoughtful people? That is the way I see it. I am giving back to the world by raising thoughtful children.

C'mon, pull up a therapy couch and tell me all about it...
